Residents of Gold Canyon know it's
a special place. Located approximately 40 miles east
of downtown Phoenix and Sky Harbor Airport, this quiet
and picturesque community is home to nearly 20,000 residents.
Gold Canyon includes 22.3 square miles of scenic and
lush Sonoran Desert.
The Hohokam Indians and the Salado
Indians inhabited the Gold Canyon area of the Superstition
Mountains and left behind a rich and interesting history.
The Hohokam were the long-standing inhabitants with
more than 2000 years of farming, building, and trading
here and throughout the Southwest. The Salado people
farmed and lived here from about AD1150 to AD 1450.
Although archeologists cannot decipher their origins,
nor explain their demise and disappearance, their pottery
and Petroglyphs (prehistoric rock drawings) they left
behind leave no question that they did indeed inhabit
Gold Canyon for about 300 years.
Gold Canyon is in the heart of the
most retold "Lost Mine" story in American
history. The story of German immigrant, Jacob Waltz,
and his lost gold mine is alive and well here. The nearly
150 year old mystery of the Lost Dutchman Mine continues
to draw treasure seekers and history buffs from around
the world even to this day. For more information about
Gold Canyon and Superstition Mountains history, be sure
to visit the Superstition
Mountains Museum.
